SAMPS Myeloma Challenge 2020
The Southern Alberta Myeloma Patient Society’s first ever Myeloma Challenge event is in the books. Due to the recent COVID-19 outbreak, we were not able to physically gather as normal for our annual Walk/BBQ fundraiser. As with a number of charitable organizations, SAMPS was able to pivot towards hosting an online, virtual event. We extended an invitation towards our membership to choose a challenge that was somewhat unique to them, and that was based upon their own personal Myeloma journey. Once the members had decided upon a challenge, we then asked them to reach out to their family and friends for donations.
We are happy to report that the SAMPS Myeloma Challenge 2020 was a rousing success. We had 4 team registrants with 33 individual participants. Challenge activities varied from walking, cycling, golf, and hiking to card-making. Congratulations go out to all who became involved.
The organizing committee is thrilled to report that we were able to surpass our $50,000 fundraising goal. The goal seemed reasonable given that other charities were reporting fundraising revenues had been cut by as much as 30%. We surpassed our goal and more — our final figure is $56,000! The monies raised are truly amazing, well beyond our expectations.
This speaks to the energy and passion that exists within the Myeloma Community to support the local Myeloma research at the University of Calgary. This support has already paid dividends for Alberta Myeloma patients. The Tom Baker Center in Calgary has hit the map as one of the forefront providers in Canada in providing clinical trials with state of the art medications and treatments to Alberta patients.
SAMPS would like to thank each and every person who took the time and energy to participate in this year’s event. Prize winners for individual, team and random categories will be notified and posted shortly. The real winners, however, are the many Myeloma patients, both current and future, who will benefit from the most important research currently available, due in part through funding raised by events such as this.
We eagerly look forward to SAMPS Myeloma Challenge 2021.
